Day 4 Wednesday

In "Interstellar Calling", by Karina Fabian, we take an all too familiar situation and let God in to do as He wills. I love this story on several levels. First, it shows how painful a single word can be, especially to a teenager. Second, we find that teenager, Frankie, trying to control a rage born of pain, with limited success. Lastly, however, is what I like best. For it is here, when we let God come into that situation that we find something truly special. It isn't about us, our abilities or inabilities, talents or lack of talents that make us useful to God. It is our availability to Him. When we make ourselves available to Him God works the miraculous through us. We see our own short-comings and He becomes our perfection. He takes away our pain as we surrender ourselves to Him and forgive those we feel have hurt us in the same way He has forgiven us. How appropriate that message is at this time of year when we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus for our sin. For Jesus looked down through the corridors of time, not just at those who stood at the cross 2000 years ago, and prayers, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." With this statement we understand the framework in which we as Christians are also to operate. It is the framework of His unmeasurable love.

INFINITE SPACE, INFINITE GOD

Day 3 Tuesday

"Hopkin's Well", by Adrienne Ray is a marvelous work in that we not only get to travel to Mars, consider the impact of "advanced" technology, but we are faced with a question. Are we, as mortals, willing to accept what we have been told to be truth, or will we challenge what we are taught so that we might come to know the truth? This is one of my favorite lines of thinking. Without going into too much of the story let me just expound on this for a moment. For a priest, minister, preacher or what have you to teach the truth is not enough. Far too many people have thought that it was. The fact of the matter is if we do not challenge what we have been taught it remains the teachings of someone else. We can not believe in ourselves, nor in God, but only in the words of man. Yet, should someone teach the truth and be accurate 100% of the time, which would be a neat trick, and we challenged those teachings against Scripture no longer would we follow the teachings of man, but the Words of God. Those who know me know that I hate to be classified as religious. I am a Christian. I challenge what I am taught and belong to one Body, that of the Lord Jesus Christ. I follow His Word by challenging what I have been taught. By that I do not mean I am critical of everything someone says. That is also falsehood. Instead I compare what has been taught by man by what is taught in Scripture. The results are amazing because God's Word is alive. It speaks to each of us where we are, if we will but listen. Then we can follow where He leads, to the neighbor down the street, a people halfway around the world, and yes, even to Mars, to Hopkin's Well, and find that He has gone on before us.

“The Harvest”, by Lori Z. Scott addresses the issue of cloning and whether or not a human clone has a soul. In "The Harvest" society has determined that clones do not have souls. This puts a doctor-turned-priest in a delicate situation when one of the clones dies. As the situation starts to spin out of control we find the answer to this question coming from the most unlikely source. I hope everyone has the chance to get a copy of INFINITE SPACE, INFINITE GOD so they can read this and other stories, just as well written and just as thought provoking. Unlike some other science fiction which basically forces the reader to accept what they've written, INFINITE SPACE, INFINITE GOD challenges the reader to make up their own minds on certain issues. It does so, however, putting the reader in the uncomfortable position of having to make some uncomfortable choices. Get it. Read it. Love it.

Day 1 Sunday

I'm not going to lie to you. I was a bit nervous about this one. I mean I grew up with a Pentecostal background, although I didn't see myself as judgmental. I felt that religion itself was wrong, and to a large degree maintain that opinion. So reviewing something that not only says it is a collection of Catholic works, but boasts about the fact put me on edge. Still, because of the contact I've had with Karina Fabian, who compiled this work with her husband Rob, I found myself timidly entering unchartered waters. While I think the “Catholic” bit was a bit overdone in some cases I have to remind myself that this was written BY Catholics and TO Catholics. No one is out to change anyone's denominational ties here. They are simply doing what writers have been told to do for ages, write about what you know, and they know Catholicism. I found out they knew a lot more as well.

In one very real sense this "Catholic" work stands as a "David" against the "Goliaths" of our day, reminding those of us from other denominational backgrounds that God is God and that taking our own personal experiences into the battle isn't always a bad thing. I would like to say this is a Christian work, and while this is true it is also a work by those refusing to be ashamed at being called Catholic. This is something many of us have forgotten.

One of my chief desires for touring INFINITE SPACE, INFINITE GOD, however, has nothing to do with Catholicism. Instead it has to do with the desire for CFRB to branch out to do short stories. This work, as well as LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF DARKNESS have helped in creating a bridge from here to there. Please check out the other sites and come back tomorrow when I'll tune in on one of the great stories in this work. I hope you will find these posts intriguing enough to go out and purchase this one of a kind book.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters... S.T.R.

My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the w ord . I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read:
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK or SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) ( i.e. . It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

What about all that psychic stuff? Yeah, I can hear the nay-sayers now. They'll be putting this great work of Christian fiction down and even possibly teaching people that this is a demonic work. I want you readers to know right up front that Somers has not added anything in this book that is offensive to the Gospel. It's the people who do not know their Bibles and think they do that will be offended the most. Well, good for James.

The Barudii warrior uses kinetic powers to enhance their natural abilities. These psychic powers aren't like those palm reader or anything of the sort. These powers are powers that are, first of all, genetically passed on. Has anyone stopped to think how Adam took care of the entire Garden of Eden on a daily basis? Could it be possible that his spirit and the Spirit of God were, at that time, so in tune that the natural abilities of his mind to move himself from place to place was commonplace? What about Philip, who after baptizing the eunich in the desert was found preaching at the city of Azotus. It says the Spirit caught up Philip and took him away. (Acts 8:26-40) If we, now being sinful, now use only 10% or less of our mind isn't it conceivable that in the sinless state we would be able to do things that would today be considered miracles? For the Barudii warrior he was simply making use of the God-given gifts he had been given. This included powers that we do not have, but prior to sin coming into the world we may well have had.

And let's not forget that we're talking about an allegory which depicts spiritual warfare in a physical sense. To do this Somers uses several different techniques, all of which I found fascinating. There is more to this than I can put down in a short post. Let's just enjoy the vision God has given James Somers and he has shared with us in his writings. After all, fiction is meant to be enjoyed, not picked apart like some frog in a biology class.

I may not be the same caliber of writer as Ted Dekker, but I have to chime in. I set the bar very high when writing my reviews. So high that many good writers only get a 4 star rating. So, how are we doing? Everyone enjoying this wonderful book? What? You didn't get it yet? Shame on you. You have to the end of the week before C.E. Lavender sends the Takers out to get you. Only kidding

That is the short story I'd like to talk about today. “Protected”, by C.E. Lavender is an amazing story where the hero learns what it means to be a hero late in the story. In the beginning he's a cross between someone trying to make a quick buck and someone trying to run from another above him. It involves the Takers, who are sent out to, well, take people. Our hero is sent to find a shield for his boss and falls in love with the woman he's suppose to set up to be taken. You can picture this out in the old west, up in the mountains, almost anywhere that seems remote. Make your own scenery, but don't miss out on what's going on. Our reluctant hero has learned something from the woman he's fallen in love with. What can it possibility be and can he really find himself “Protected” by it if he uses it in his own life? Well, you'll have to read it to find out. I'm not telling. Daniel I. Weaver has several stories in this anthology, this is one of the less graphic, yet somehow it is more poignant that the others. THE LONGING SEASON by Christine Schaub

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Christine Schaub is the author of the MUSIC OF THE HEART series, including Finding Anna, the rest of the story behind the writing of the hymn It Is Well With My Soul (October 2005) and The Longing Season, the story behind Amazing Grace (July 2006) with Bethany House Publishers, a division of Baker Books.

In 2003, Christine won the On the Page screenwriting contest at Screenwriting Expo 2 in Los Angeles. Her one-page story, written on-site in 24 hours for Jacqueline Bisset, was selected by the actress as the best Oscar Wilde-type comedy for her persona.

While working in freelance corporate communications, Christine completed three feature-length screenplays, including a drama/comedy, romantic comedy, and sci-fi action/drama; developed four biopic teleplays for the stories behind the hymns; and published an online column for the MethodX website (Upper Room Ministries).

Christine honed her writing skills after more than 15 years in corporate communications for healthcare, pharmaceutical, and entertainment companies. She has also been a featured conference speaker on working with at-risk youth and changed lives in the classrooms with her creative presentation style.

Christine's love for the arts and creativity have taken her from church platforms to civic and professional stages, performing classics and dramas from her own pen.

Christine graduated from Anderson University with a bachelors degree in Mass Communications. She has served on numerous boards and committees, usually as Communications Chair, and has received both regional and national awards in writing and design.

Light at the Edge of Darkness - a review

Immerse yourself in a collection of Christian Speculative Fiction that you will never forget. CFRB Author Chat

Thanks to Karina Fabian, who has opened up her website to CFRB for author chats, we are not able to offer this feature to all our members. We'd like to have the author run a short (yeah right) chat a week or two before their book goes on tour. Then sometime during the blogtour of their work have another author chat. During these chats all CFRB members are welcome as is the general public, so if you have a book coming up, but it's down the road a bit you may wish to join in with us and have some fun.

Last night we had a "trial run" with Cynthia MacKinnon, editor for LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF DARKNESS as the guest host. It was a total blast. After the "designated" chat time ended we stayed on for a while. I have no idea how long the others stayed on, but I bowed out at around 10:40 PM. I knew if I didn't get off I'd be up all night. It was so much fun talking, joking and learning from each other.
